11:50 pm - Up
We saw Up today. I honestly had no idea what the story was about, or what we were in for, save for the fact that I heard it was the first animated feature to ever open the Cannes Film Festival.

Well. Within minutes of the start of the movie, I was overcome. You know how it is when you see a work of art that makes you cry just for the fact that you realize that there are people who exist who can create something so staggeringly beautiful and unique. But, it's more than that. You are crying also for the fact that you have wondered if there is anything that has not already been done and you are regretting such thoughts. You are crying because there are yet infinite possibilities. You are crying because this is being done in a most influential form and is intended for a most easily influenced audience, and holy fucking hell, am I a cynical person but I've always said that the true cynic is just a frustrated optimist.

1:24 pm - Grey Gardens
Of course from the instant I heard about the Beales of Grey Gardens (the documentaries) years ago, I became intrigued and enthralled and OK so now that I've seen the HBO movie, I've moved on to somewhat obsessed. I watched the movie again last night and was yet again blown away by it. It may be the second best movie I've seen all year (the best being Two Lovers)!

Look at this page and scroll down. There is a Little Edie Blythe doll!!!!!!!!!!!

10:44 pm - Death to Tully's
Many of you take offense to "words" created by media "masterminds" in order to pique our interest and/or threaten our taste buds with promises of deliciousness of the most extreme variety. Snicker's despicable "Hungerectomy" ads immediately come to mind.

Some of us shudder. Others may be inspired to extremes, like taking the chance of missing one's flight in order to leave a note in the Tully's suggestion box.

For the love of god, for the love of us folks with taste- dare I say integrity- I beg of you, do away with the BELLACCINO. Just because the two words actually DO exist (separately) in the Italian language does not mean that it is acceptable to merge them together to make up a word for a beverage that may be called by the more common "frozen coffee shake."

Thank you.

Signed,
A Concerned Citizen

In related news, I am appalled by that abomination of pasta dish that comes in a bread bowl at Dominoes.

4:25 pm - One Night On a Kansas Farm
The plains of western Kansas are even lonelier than the sea. Men, farm houses and windmills become specks against the vast sky. At night, the wind seems to have come from hundreds of miles distant. Diesel-engine horns echo immensity. During the day, one drives flat out through shimmering mirages. Highways all roll straight to the point of infinity on a far horizon. Tires click; tumbleweed rustles; Coca-Cola signs endlessly creak.

A book review for In Cold Blood that reads like literature.

I was just doing a little search on the book and location, when this gem came up. I read it, thinking it was some gorgeous writing, unlike anything I'm used to reading on the web, no less in the Times. Then I looked at the date.

current mood: kinda astonished

1:17 pm - 7 years
I can't believe it's 7 years. I still think of my motions that day, the way I had typically overslept, showered in a daze, with the words of Howard Stern replaying in my head. I thought he was joking about the World Trade Center. But I also knew he wasn't. But none of this was conscious thought, if that makes any sense.

Walking out my front door, still in another world, but I noticed that people were crying in the street. Ok, it's just my imagination getting the best of me again, I thought No, really, something is really fucking wrong here...back and forth, back and forth.

When I crossed Grand Street, I didn't even think to turn to my left and look, look at those buildings that I would look at every day as I crossed Grand St. on my way to the train. They were a source of awe for me. Like, even though I grew up here, I never ever stop appreciating the New York City skyline. Quite the opposite. In fact, as I always joke, I almost get this sense of panic when I'm leaving the city, seeing that skyline getting smaller and smaller, a figurative stretching of the umbillical cord. When I was a kid growing up on LI and we'd visit my family who lived in Brooklyn and Queens every weekend, I'd stare out the window just waiting for the skyline to appear and when it did, I'd exclaim, "there's the Empire State Building! There's the Twin Towers!" I still make such exclaimations in my head.

So, no, on that day, I didn't look as I attempted to make my way to the subway. How I fucking wish I had. There was still one building left at that time. And when I returned not more than five minutes later, that one building was gone and all I could see was the largest, blackest cloud I have ever seen in my life.

current mood: sad

I love writing about minute annoyances, if you haven't already guessed...

I rarely eat muffins, but today I felt like eating one. I should have learned from the last time I bought one of those "Healthy Delites" (argh!!! never trust a muffin that can't spell) and I split the fucking thing open because I don't trust deli muffins, even if they are vegan, and found tiny, questionable blue specks...and no, it wasn't a blueberry muffin. It also had that...taste. Kind of like the smell of rotting pumpkin. Know what I mean? Deeeeeep inside the worst of all muffins, sometimes you will taste that. Why, because the muffin isn't fresh and yes, although the date CLAIMS it's good until 7/29, WHY OH WHY should you be eating a week-old muffin??!! When there are bakeries aplenty? Why, because when you're in a rush to make it to work on time, you're into one-stop shopping. Also, there are not a ton of options that are within walking distance in DUMBO.

So, yeah, another muffin tossed in the trash immediately.

This is also why I don't ever buy those premade vegetarian sandwiches either. If you live in NYC you know which ones I am talking about. Once, because I am THAT way, I opened the sandwich to inspect the insides. Not only did I find woefully limp/mushy lettuce leaves, but there was MOLD. UGH UGH UGH. The date claimed it was good for two more days.

WHO, pray tell, determines these fucking dates?

SO...I am only buying fresh from now on, or nothing at all. Fuck this stale/rancid overpriced shit.

Yes, it's true!

I am pretty excited about this as...this is where I went on a weekly basis back in the early 90s, and besides Communion at the Limelight, I truly remember it as being one of the BEST goth parties EVER!!!
